​VIDEO DUBBING MODULE 

This module's dubbing assignment was an interesting experience and provided engaging, proactive approach for me to enhance my English proficiency and apply teachniques in teaching career as well. There are many benefits I can earn after trying my first time with this module like significantly improved Listening Comprehension, Speaking Confidence, Fluency, Pronunciation, Vocabulary Usage, Emotional Expression in Speech, Timing and Pacing and Team Work.

Among all the language skills, I believe this task helped me improve pronunciation, fluency, and speaking confidence the most. Since dubbing requires close imitation of the original speaker’s patterns. I had to listen carefully and repeat the lines several times. This repetitive practice helped me correct mispronunciations and sound more natural through stress, intonation, and linking sounds.

In terms of fluency, for sure, the process of rehearsing lines forced me to speak which gradually reduced my hesitation, improved my pacing, and made my speech sound more effortless.

Furthermore, dubbing task built my confidence, I was nervous about recording my voice and sharing it with my group. But through recorded, repeated rehearsals over 20 times, feedback, and performance, I felt more comfortable speaking aloud. Performing the final dubbing video in front of class also gave me a sense of accomplishment, encouragement, express mysefl professional identity, which boosted my confidence.

The collaboration with my group members really contributed to my oral development. Our mother’s language is all Vietnamese, so it’s convenient for us to get better understanding our own thoughts and ideas refering apply differents tools and steps combining together during the process of designing dubbing task. Particularly, we supported and discussed how to translate slang words or some expressions into the second language in the right way. We divide the characters, gave each other feedback, and practiced together that also raise our close friend relationship up.

From Phase 1 to the final presentation, I noticed a big change in my speaking performance. In the beginning, my speech wasn’t match a character’s feelings. But after my big efforts, in real conversation presentations, I become more expressive and persuasive, match a character’s feelings when live performing.

The most challenging phase for me was the recording and editing phase. It was difficult to sync my voice with the character’s mouth movements while keeping the right tone and speed. I had to record multiple times and adjust the volume and timing to make it fit. It was frustrating at times, but also rewarding when everything finally matched well.

I am not good at technology, so during processing for completing dubbing module, my professor and my friends suggested me some useful apps, clear and specific instructions, samples. That means a lot to me, although I must spend many hours to find out how to use and get familar with these editing techniques.

Using ChatGPT was beneficial throughout the translation and the rehearsal stage. We use Chat GPT for extracting and comparing the original video with the automatic translation subtitile. We extract the Vietnamese dialogue from the original video and extract the dialogue from the translated video into English. Then we compare the two versions of the translation, identify the parts that are not accurately translated, and use appropriate language to make corrections. Moreover, it as a rehearsal aid and a pronunciation checker. When we finish, we asked Chat GPT for comments, then we learnt and redo for better completion. However, we were careful not to rely too much on ChatGPT. We didn’t let it write the script or do the work for us. Instead, we treated it as a language assistant — like a dictionary, a pronunciation coach. Using it in moderation made me feel more independent and focused on improving my own English skills.

Overall, I would definitely consider using dubbing in my future teaching. It’s a creative way to help students improve pronunciation, listening, and speaking in a fun and interactive way. It also encourages collaboration and performance, which can make language learning more enjoyable.
